Pinch me, I think I’m dreaming
We were standing around the parking lot, measuring dimensions for a multisport court. I looked over to an outstanding young leader from the community. All around us smiles flooded the faces of youth interacting with each other, architects, and funders. A dream, ten years in the making, was coming together.
Is this really happening?
It would take another 10 months before construction would be completed, before youth from the Ridgeway community would be able to celebrate their accomplishments. And it was their accomplishment. From not letting go of the dream, to committing to learning about leadership and advocacy, to filming videos and developing presentations for funders, to planning, recruiting others to help, designing, and making decisions—some of which they had to stand up for before official committees and institutions.
There is power in youth. At Erin Mills Youth Centre we believe one way this power is unleashed is through adult-youth partnerships where mutuality, reciprocity and respect abound.
We believe in the youth of Mississauga. We believe with the right supports, opportunities to develop skills and perspectives, youth can achieve their goals and develop goals that will positively change communities—that will impact the city, the province, the country.
